I recently got to thinking, there were once medical conditions and surgical procedures that were common at one time, but almost unheard of today.
For instance, when I left the Marine Corps I had a duodenal ulcer that wouldn't heal so I had it surgically repaired. At that time, ulcers were almost a status symbol. Now you rarely, if ever, hear of them What changed?
In 1971, at age 72, my father was diagnosed as having cancer of the throat. Most likely caused from being a life-long pipe smoker. He underwent surgery and radiology treatments and beat the cancer, but they removed his voice box in the process. He died of a stroke 13 years later. For those last 13 years, he spoke by holding an electronic device next to this throat. It was a mechanical sound, but at least he was able to communicate, although he shied away from talking on the telephone.
That, also, was not uncommon at the time but virtually unheard of today. I'm sure there are many, many more similar cases. Do lifestyle changes, nutritional changes, or other factors enter into the picture? Do external factor have an impact? For instance, attitude changes could lessen stress, thereby reducing the onset of ulcers.
Didn't mean to bore ya'll, but I just got to thinking about it.
