In order to expand on what Pete said, the normal upright configuration is when the holes are facing up. Many folks have the opening to the sides so they can take advantage of the larger surface area, but this is wrong for heavy loads. I don't put heavy loads on cinder blocks, and lay them flat on their side for flotation on our soft soil. But when the load is heavy, they definitely go upright!
