: Most manuals suggest that you use a file to dress points and never to use sandpaper or emery paper. Does anybody know why? The best choice is to replace the points! The lower distributor advance can get the sand or metallic bits. Also it's good to clean the advance and points and lube with grease made for it. Clean your feeler guage before you put it between the points! Be sure to install all possibly missing seals etc., under the plastic plate that covers the points, and under the rotor. I've seen many tractors with a few simple pieces missing and become quite dirty inside the distributor.
