Whatever you do, do NOT auction it; at least not without a reserve. I've seen old fire trucks that I thought would sell high go for nothing, while other trucks that didn't much interest me went crazy high. It all has to do with location and whether someone is in the market at that time.
As that is an older truck, it kills me to say that it will probably not be a fire dept. that buys it, as the pumps and the truck itself are old - possible trouble of getting parts.
If you need an off-road rig, it might be worth your while to look into having a drive axle mounted on the front and convert the truck into a larger brush truck. ...Just don't know. Almost makes me cry to see perfectly good equipment taken out of service.
...Don't s'pose there's a chance your dept. could just keep it as a backup/parade truck, is there? I say this because during my 1st year as a fire fighter, I was riding in the jump seat of our new 3,000 engine (brand new!!) while responding. All the lights blinded an oncoming driver on a narrow rural road and we ended up turning over. Messed the truck up pretty bad, but got it repaired. However, we were suddenly down a truck....and a very expensive truck at that!! Fortunately we had enough other trucks as well as good mutual aid to cover that loss, but it's never a good thing to suddenly lose a vital piece of equipment.
Guess a lot depends on how many other trucks you have, the likelihood of a major fire in your area, and the availability of mutual aid.
