: I have a 10hp briggs on a lawn tractor (horiz)that had a very weak spark. (Spark tester wont spark and engine would not fire when turned over) I visually checked all wires for some sort of crack or short. I then cleaned the magnets on the fly wheel, put everything back together and bang, she fired right up...even got to mow the the pasture...but after i shut it down and came back later that day and tried to start it I get nothing but a faint spark..Im back to square 1 again..(note I replaced the orig armature with a Briggs version that doesnot reqire points)What else should I look at? any tips much appreciated. dave The air gap between the armature and the flywheel will effect spark strength. The closer it is the stronger the spark will be. I usually use an index card folded in half to set the gap. turn the flywheel so that the magnets are lined up with the armature put the card in between, then loosen the screws that hold the armature an let the magnet pull it against the flywheel then tighten the bolts back up.
