I think Bret's post below is spot on. Wal-Mart tries to push that they have lower prices, etc, etc, and many succumb to this thinking. I only buy from Wal-Mart when an item is significantly lower in price, or (the most important) if the item is not available at any other store. And, I never buy meat from Wal-Mart. Even then, my wife and I tend to buy more and more from on-line retailers, as I am finding that Wal-Mart often cannot compete with some of those. I guess I look at it differently, if you cannot compete, time to pack and go. Not saying that I do not have sympathy for those small retailers, but many that actually adapted and try, find ways to compete, or offer a service that those big retailers cannot. Those that fold, simply do not try to adapt or compete. Auto parts giants are doing the same.....I was in the market yesterday for a fuel filter.....guess what - Wal Mart apparently quit offering fuel filters, O-Reilly's price approx. $23 (not including tax)!!. Online price with free shipping, and no sales tax - under $14 (and it was not Rock Auto). Guess who got that business? Sorry if I got off topic a bit, but it is getting to the point that Wal-mart and many of those big retailers are NOT the low price as they try to make us believe, and you have to shop these days.
