I'd also like to recommend the bare use of gaskets and the correct O-rings and seals when used on hydraulic control units. Saturday, I put in several hours cleaning Permatex off all surfaces, bolt holes, and hydraulic passages of an IH 1486 mutiple control valve (MCV) unit. The owner had gooped it up good thinking it was his only way of keeping it from blowing gaskets. Actually his problem was he'd put a special seal washer between the plates of the unit, where an O-ring should be used. The washer wouldn't collapse with it's outer steel ring. Sometimes paper gaskets get dry and will break easy. I spray WD-40 on them and in a few minutes the spray will be soaked up, but the gasket will be more flexible. Flexible gaskets seal up better. Many gaskets sit for many days before being used and the WD-40 will even let you stretch a gasket to fit better if you use enough of it.
