rrlund, while I've had days very much like yours, I'm glad they don't happen often. I hope your day was an aberration rather than "normal". That sort of trouble on a daily basis builds more character than I could probably stand.
RedMF, I agree. If it's not right, if at all possible, fix it before it ends up costing a lot more. If you can't fix it right, don't make the problem any worse for yourself or anyone else.
CenTex, last year I bought a full set of bearings (from pilot bearing to final drives) expecting to replace them before they got "bad". In desperation I thought about just replacing the tranny bearings and seeing how it might be, but realized it still won't be "right" even if it holds up another few years. It goes against my grain, if ya-know-what-I-mean.
2ru, Oh, absolutely - the design of most of these old machines is incredibly forgiving and durable. Anything made in the last 30-40 years would have likely failed completely within hours of losing bearings like that, rather than keeping going for years in spite of being "broken". Makes me think that with proper care, tractors made before the 60's will still be going long after tractors made in the 90's receiving equally proper care are sitting in scrap yards.
