Interesting comments. I was willing to pay for a pair of tires, just not $50 for 2 questionable tires that were mismatched and going on a tractor doing bush hog duty where they are bound to get thorns, and I think everyone can agree that they would take free when offered. I had basically two requirements.....round and hold air, not much else. There are far too many tire shops cutting up tires and tossing into dumpsters to be paying $50 for what I was looking for. If I was looking for 50% tread to go on my pickup, I might have been given them a look, but could probably at least find matched pair for that price. The area I work in has several tire shops within a few minutes drive so I knew I could cover quite a bit of ground in a short time, and come up with something that would work. I spent probably 20 minutes during my lunch visiting 4 shops, and might have burned half a gallon of fuel, so no big deal either way even if I went home with nothing. Before I would have paid $50 for two questionable tires I would simply have purchased new tri ribs. No, I did not ask the shop about if he in fact charged a disposal fee, but it would be interesting to know if he is collecting a disposal fee then selling those same tires - my guess is that several do though, especially when you see single tires for sale vs. a full set. Not saying the guy is a bad guy, just got my curiosity up. The tires that were given to me one had a visible plug next to the sidewall, and the other a bruised sidewall, which is no big deal on a tractor, as it is highly likely they will have several plugs within a short time. This deal likely helped both of us since I can use them, and saved him paying to dispose or labor to cut them up to put in dumpster, so it was a win-win.
