: Can anyone who has owned or operated 2 cylinder models and the new generation models (after 1960) give me a perspective on the merits of each. Some claim that the 2 cylinder models were just made better, more reliable, etc. I ask becuase I don't have much experience on either and own a Model 1010 but love the looks of the Model 50 and 420 series. Thanks for your input. Your 1010 is essentially a 430 from the clutch back. The 430 was a 420 with different tin and dashboard design. The engine in the 1010 was flawed in it's design somewhat, so it really didn't have the reliability of the 2-cyl predecessors. The 1010 was an alternative to the 440, which carried on the 2-cyl design until 1964 in the industrial line - expressly for reliability reasons. That said, the most useful model in the 420/430 line was the Row Crop Utility. It had a dual cylinder lift and, when equipped with live PTO it was quite useful. I have both a 420W and a 430W and use them often. However, my 1520 (essentially a 1020 with a larger bore) diesel is FAR more useful than any of the 420/430/1010 series ever dreamed of being. The hydraulics are incredibly powerful by comparison. It has independant, hydraulically activated PTO and enough capacity to operate a loader, power steering and the lift all at once. The closed center design doesn't use power unless you need it. Also, the differential lock is nice. The operators' platform and seat is far more comfortable than the 420 is. Now, if I compare my 1530 to the new 4000 or 5000 series, I see the same sort of improvements there. I am saving for a 5210 to replace my 1520 in the spring. I'll still keep one of the 2-cyl machines around to use as a dedicated lawn mower (It's nice having an 8' riding mower around), though.
