: I am considering buying a 404 Farmall from a friend. It is in good shape mechanically-not to pretty though-has duel remotes and 3 point hitch. I know very little about this particular model of Farmall. Could someone tell me the pros and cons of it? I know they were made from 1961-68 but there are very few of them around this area. Were they not reliable? My friend bought it to resell so he knows little of it's personal history. Let me know what y'all know.

I bought a 1962 404 last year for $1000. It was in terrible condition. Bent push roads, 2 stuck valves, clutch slipping, metal in hydralic filter, powdered rear axle bearings, a ball of rust. It did, however, run on 2 of its 4 cyliders. After about 400 hundred hours of labor and $1800 of parts the tractor runs and looks like a dream. It has the same engine (C135) as the old "H", a very reliable engine. What do you need the tactor for? Narrow front end makes the tractor less stable on hills and uneven ground. The tactor is also light in the front end. Although it has the HP to pull a good-sized harrow or flatbottom, the tractor tends to want to pop wheelies when you raise the equipment with the hydralics. I bought mine more fas a project/hobby and would recommend the tractor for bushhogging, garden work, cultivating, etc. Unless you can find a wide front end (from a 2404) and/or a weight rack for the front, I would not try to use large plows or pull stumps. Any questions e-mail me at spemcs@alltel.net

I have been a collector of Farmall tractors since 1990 when I first obtained part of the family farm in Eastern Indiana. My current collection includes a 1938 F20, 1945 H, 1946 H, and the recently purchased 1951 H. This article will focus on what I encountered and what I did to bring the 1951 NEAR DEATH Farmall H back to life. ... [Read Article]
