: I am tired of running out of horsepower at weight-transfer pulls and am contemplating building a tractor for this kind of pulls for somewhere around the 5000# classes. If money were no object (it is) what kind of tractor should I be looking for, Oliver 77/88, Farmall M or what? Anyone been there and done that?
: thanks. Dan
If you are talking antique tractor pulls we pull a straight stock 1946 Farmall M and the M's do quite well up here. We pull in the 6400lb. class too much work to unload the tires as the tractor is still used around the farm. Some M's do pull in the 5400lb class though and are rarely beaten, though have seen Farmall H's do it. Now these tractors are well turned up on the govenors and run their tires around 8 to 10 lbs of air, also I am guessing have their valves done with an 45 angle as they run aftermarket manifolds that look more like headers, but still stock appearing. One thing I have found with the Farmall we never run out of power even at 7400 lbs we can still spin out in second gear. I myself am new to pulling, pulled once first time last year with my dads tractor that he is storing in my garage since he sold his farm and moved to town. Just take a long good look and listen to the tractors that are doing well and you will be able to tell a lot about how they are set up, you know what they say nothing runs like a deer but nothing pulls like a Farmall. By the way what do you pull now?
Good luck whatever your choice Terry.
