Greg - Never seen such a conversion, but don't think it would be to difficult to accomplish. If I were doing it, I'd keep the existing 24 volt starter and install a "series-parallel" starting solenoid like used on many diesel-powered trucks. (This connects two 12v batteries in series for starting and in parallel for running.) Only other concern is to make sure you use a 12v alternator and alternator output wiring with sufficient capacity - at least 70 amps or so.
