Rick,

I think your 580 has a combination band and disk brake. I just converted my CASE 420B to the band/disk combination that I acquired from a CASE 530.

Yes the brake pedal actuates linkage which causes the band to clamp on the drum which in turn expands and forces the faces of the disks to rub against the inboard and outboard surfaces of the brake pod. The pedal linkage has a rod going into the pod. First adjust the nut on the rod to give the right pedal position which is about 1" of travel.

The greatest probability is that the brakes are saturated with differential lubricant. This seems to be a universal problem with this style tractor. You will need to replace the seals and run the lubrication at the minimum level to reduce the chance of seepage.

Remove the pods and wash/soak the brakes in solvent to remove the oil. When the pod cover is removed there is a plate about 10" square mounted at an angle on each side of the differential housing. Remove them and then remove and replace the round lip seals. CAUTION: THE PLATES HOLD THE PINION BEARINGS IN PLACE AND HAVE SHIMS BEHIND THEM TO GIVE THE CORRECT PRE-LOAD TO THE TAPERED ROLLER BEARINGS. DO NOT MIX THE PARTS AND BE SURE THE SHIMS ARE NOT DAMAGED AND ARE RE-INSTALLED BEHIND THE PLATES.

If the linings are worn on the bands or disks, take them to a local clutch/brake relining shop and have new ones riveted on. Usually large cities have a truck clutch/brake repair shop that specializes in this work for the local repair shops in the town.

Good Luck!

: Hi,
: I recently acquired a Case 580-CK diesel
: backhoe. The units seems to run smootlyand the front
: and rear buckets seem to operate OK. The whole
: thing seems pretty well worn.
: The biggest problem I have at this point
: is: NO BRAKES ! Looking in a service manual that
: came with the unit, these appear to be "band" type
: brakes that are actuated by mechanical linkage
: from the pedals.
: I'm COMPLETELY UNFAMILIAR with tractors,
: backhoes and similar equipment. Can anyone assist
: in suggestions on how to remedy the brake problem,
: including parts sources ?
: Please post your responses to one or both
: of my e-mail addresses in addition to this newsgroup.

: Thanks,
