I have had good luck several times.
Bought my first truck. Drove it home about 50 miles. Checking it over I could catch what oil came out of the transmission in the palm of one hand! I filled it and hoped for the best. It never bothered. (Clark 5 speed in F600)
I bought my first combine, an early Gleaner E, at auction for $800. I brought it home and spent about that much more on it, mostly in belts. I used it for several years.
I bought a low time, very beat up Gleaner K2 from a dealer. I fixed it up, and it was likewise a good, dependable machine.
I traded the K2, with an out of state dealer, for an F2, sight unseen! When it came it was also a fixer upper. The dealer did supply most of the parts. Another good machine.
I was looking for a 55 HP tractor. I had grown up with both a JD2510, and AC D17IV, so I was shopping for them. I looked at a nice 2520, and continued shopping. After I found the AC's bringing top dollar at auction, I called the guy with the 2520. He had traded it. Oh no!!!!! I called the dealer, and ended up buying it for less than the individual wanted! He didn't like JD's- said "get it out of here" !(He was selling Belarus)
I bought a big old Steiger, sight unseen, from a jockey. He turned out to be a liar. But I fixed it up, and used it for 10 years. It was brutal, but cheap power. When I sold it, it left here, like everything else, in better shape than it came. I calculated my cost into it, and figured it was still cheaper than leasing a tractor, and I had it at my disposal full time.
I bought a tractor through an on line auction, out of state, sight unseen (except for pictures) A little fixing, and it has done well.
Bought an old dump truck on line auction from a used car dealer. Probably 100 miles away in the next state. He claimed it was road worthy. He said he would put a dealer plate on it so I could drive it home. It was a slow ride. Barely made it. Fortunately there was a farm equipment dealer on the way home, who happened to have an in line 5/16 filter, and we proceeded! When I started in fixing it I found so much crud in the gas tank I took it off and steamed it out!
