sounds like you have a Delco 17si alternator. These are the most common and have been used since time eternal on Chev's, etc.

There is a main stud on the back marked "BAt" There is also a plug with two terminals. Not sure about red and white, but if you look at the alternator on from the back, the one on the left is the #1 terminal and the right is #2. Wiring scheme is something like this:

Wire the "Bat" straight to the battery (or solenoid) with a fairly heavy, #10AWG wire. Jumper the #2 wire to the "Bat" terminal. This is a voltage sensing wire for the reguolator inside. Wire the #1 terminal to an indicator lamp - I use a side marker lamp socket with a side marker lamp. I just tape it under the hood somewhere. The other side of the marker lamp goes to the iginition switch so that it is energized when the switch is turned on.

The starter is okay. A 6 volt starter will work on 12 volts forever, and a positive ground will be just fine on negative ground. Hook up battery - 12 volt NEGATIVE ground. Turn key on. Marker light should light. Start engine. Marker light will stay on until you goose the throttle, indicating the regulator is working and the alternator is charging when it goes out. If you have an ammeter, it goes in the "Bat" line.

Simple as that.
