: There was some discussion recently about replacing the std. crankshaft bearings in a Super A with .003 under sized bearings to make up for wear and to boost oil pressure. If you want to replace the bearings without removing the crankshaft how do you measure the journal diameter with the crank still in the engine to be sure that .003 under isn't too tight. The only sure way I can think of is to install the bearings and check with plastigauge to see if the running clearance is ok. John John, I finished my super A yesterday, wound up putting .002 oversize bearings in it. The cold pressure now is 65#, govenorspeed hot- 25#, idle hot,- 15#. It just needed it on the rods, the mains were really ok, you can look at the bearings and the shaft to determine if it can use oversize units.
