: : : I purchased a 1949 Cub last weekend. it will run at an idle but as soon as you increase the gas or put it in gear it bogs down. The guy I bought it from said it needed the carburetor cleaned. I believe it has the wrong carbuertor on it. It has a Zenith on it but only a few parts from thw rebuilb kit would fit. How can I find out if this is the correct carburetor and if not were can I purchaced a new or rebuilt one. Thanks in advance for any HELP.

: : Chuck, It could be the correct replacement carb. Case IH now provides Zenith as replacement for the origional IH carb. Get a Zenith number from the carb and check with CaseIH to see if its the correct unit. Jo

: Chuck, I bought a Cub last year and it took me forever to figure out what was wrong with mine. Although mine has a original IH carb on it they are both very similar. I did everything I could to try to make that thing run. It would idle just like yours, but when you gave it gas it would die. I asked at the dealer and other people around and everyone said I needed a new carb. I refused to take that for a answer. I went ahead and bought a rebuild kit from the IH dealer against there advice. Guess what? It ran! It was the needle and seat under the float that fixed it. You couldn't tell anything was wrong by looking, but there was. As far as the Zenith carbs know that NAPA sells rebuild kits for them for a fraction of what your Case/IH dealer does. Although they only have certain numbers that there kits will replace. Give them a call with the numbers of your Zenith carb and I amm sure they will have one to fix you up. I priced there kits and they were $17.99 for the Cub "if it would have fit" and $23.99 for my H. So they are not that much. I had to pay $34.99 for the correct one at the dealer, so give them a call. Also I know on the parts section of this YT they have new Zenith carbs for Cubs. You might check it out or call around. I hope ths helps, if you have any questions e-mail me at tractor@aye.net. As for everyone who reads this check out NAPA they have lots of tractor parts for IH I'm not sure about others, but it's worth a shot. They could save you a lot of money and they generally have them in stock, because not many people know they carry them.

Bill & Jo, 'Thanks for the info on the Cub Carb. I was lucky and found a used IH Carb yesterday. I ran home and for the fifth time changed Carbs. At first it worked, but after awhile the motor started surging. The books say if this happens you need to adjust the mixture needle. No matter how I adjusted it, nothing happened. That only means that I need to rebuild the IH Carb. It had sat with no gas in it for over two years. The local (60 miles) CT Farm & Country sales the IH rebuilt kits for $18.95. I really appreciate your response. I thought I was the only Cub owner to ever have this problem!

The saga starts with the following message: Hey guys I have a decision to make. I know what you all will probably suggest and it will probably agree with me way down inside, but here it is. I have a picture blown up and framed in my "tractor room" of a Farmall M. It was my Grandpa's tractor, of which whom I never got to meet. He froze to death getting this tractor out of the barn to pull a truck out of the ditch before I was born. Anyway my dad and aunt had to sell it at the auction, ... [Read Article]
