In as much as one can do their best to be civil, polite, compassionate to a seemingly troubled person as described, invariably, people like this will often just sink themselves.
A dramatized portrayal of something similar, was in the movie "A Few Good Men". It may or may not be good example, but the prosecution planned and executed their strategy, to get a rise out of Colonel Jessup, for the purpose of winning a conviction, and that was portrayed in the scene where Col. Jessup admitted, (while embroiled) that he ordered the code red. Its a hollywood movie, meant to attract an audience, but the scene definitely characterizes a troubled person who through careful manipulation, snaps under intense scrutiny.
No different then hockey, a game I still enjoy playing, (highly dislike the NHL because of the fighting, its like WWF) where a player draws a penalty out of a hot head by using their brain instead of their brawn.
We have a lady down the road from the stable, she freaked out at the doorstep on christmas eve last year, eventually the law had to deal with her.
I don't particularly believe in entrapping or embroiling a situation for many reasons, but sometimes you have no choice but to let the line out and let them run with it.
