I've seen many different ways of CPS failures, they definitely dont always fail with the same symptoms, some would just be a misfire concern, some died totally, some would only die when warm or running awhile etc. They are so notorious for failure I've know plenty of people to carry a spare in the glove box along with the 10mm socket or wrench to change it on the side of the road.
Its almost considered a diagnostic step to replace it by many people people too. Of course I'd probably start with a couple other things first.
