There is up 8" of soil on the plateau of land {1/2 to 1 mile wide} between the cliff edge and the low mountain inland. The further you go towards the mountain the soil depth drops to 4".
The west coast of Wales gets the full force of the rain coming in from the Atlantic - we get a LOT of rain here :cry:
Most grass is conserved as silage either chopped or wrapped as big round bales. We do get some dry days when a few farmers make some small square hay bales for the horse people.
But the weather is too changeable to guarantee a long dry spell for hay making. The wet weather & poor soil makes growing wheat or barley for grain none viable. A small acreage of Spring sown Wheat is planted to be foraged for whole crop silage
