It's been a bunch of years and my uncle was the one did the actual hook up, but I remember it was when we were jump starting the tractor from a completely discharged battery. I seem to remember the negative jumper cable went to the neg batt terminal and he bypassed the rest of the system, including switch, by taking the positive cable straight to the starter. Like I said, it's been at least 25 years but there was no mistaking having 4 reverse gears. mt : Mat, : How did you get the engine to turn over backwards? The series-field starter motors will only spin one way regardless of battery polarity. : : I just replaced the points coil and such. But soon as I replaced this another problem showed up. : : : 1.As soon as I get it started it runs great for about 3 minutes then it starts to knock and then dies. : : : 2. I checked all fluids -fine : : : 3. When I checked the Oil filter there was barely any oil in the cannister. : : : I am suspecting that the oil pump is bad and that after starting to warming up the knocking starts and kills it. : : : Does this sound right? : : : If so how do replace the pump( in general) : : : Please E-Mail if possible : : : TIA, : : : Bill : : It may go without saying, but make sure you have the positive going to ground and not the negative. These little engines WILL start and run backwards but not well. Been there-done that when I was about 14. Some folks will say they won't run backward but I had four reverse gears and one forward for a couple of minutes. It behaved much like yours does. Running backwards you get no oil flow, either.
