Our entire unit is in the attic. We put the condensing unit outside on a pad And the evaporator coils; blower fan; along with the heating unit (gas or electric) goes in the attic. All the ducts are run in the attic also. The only part of the central unit in the living space is the thermostat and the air filter.
Some of the older houses that have had central units added and no attic space available have a all in one unit that sits outside and then a duct runs from that under the floor.
