We've got an old barn on the place where I make hay, it is easily 100 years old - but ready to fall down. It was built by my great grandfather and was used only with horses and loose hay. My boys are 5th generation. When I was a boy, squares were stacked in it to the ceiling and between that overloading weight, old age and ground hogs undermining the foundation - it is about ready to give up the ghost.
We need to start the discussion/planning for a rebuild, refurb or tear down and new barn.
There are a couple things at play. My Dad is still kicking (very well I might add) at 83 years old. I think he would like to see it stay - just because it is a fixture on the place - which I appreciate. My guess is that if NEW barn is put-up, this one will linger until it's a pile of fallen lumber.
However - I've been thinking about the potential for rebuilding this barn - or at least salvaging what's left of it, reduced to one floor (vs having a loft) and to the extent we can keep the original sides - just shoring things up and lowering the roof. Nothing is planned - nothing is firm. Just starting to look at my options.
Don't have any ready made pics of the barn - up close, but cropped some pics I had to show front/back - just some bits of it for context. I'll post more pics over the weekend.
Question is - if we shoot for a rebuild, what ideas, tips, recommendations would you have for this old barn?
