: : : : The thrust of my questions is how does a John Deere riding mower stack up? : John Deere equipment is well respected, even the mowers. MTD does make many of the riding mowers on the market today including Cub Cadet and even some Toro. I have a personal bias toward the early Cub Cadets (when international harvester still made them (1974). If you can pick up a nice Cub Cadet 128 w/ 48 inch deck you will have good value and flex to grow with the equipment. These are direct drive units and give more working horse power and one less belt to deal with. You can grease the mower spindles and they will last forever. You should find a clean one for less than $1,000 (with some extras) - use it five/ten years and sell it for a profit. : I would be interested to know which mowers MTD makes for Toro. I work at the main consumer manufacturing plant for Toro and know of the other plants that they use.
