When the factory designed those steps, or maybe I should call them ladders, they must have thought we were only going to exit the cab once a day and we had plenty of time to do it while the wind is blowing the door into our shoulders and ribs. I extended the steps out six inches with expanded metal treads and 1/8 thick steel plate for sides on my 1086 soon after I bought it new in 79 so I can exit the cab facing out. I also put after market railings on the inside of the doors to have something to hang onto and to keep the wind from ripping the door off. I've never slipped enough to fall in the 16000 hours I've used it. They aren't perfect, meaning they catch mud but they sure do speed up exit times. Getting out of the cab quick so I could run back and shut the gate before the cattle got out was kind of important to me back when I made them.
