: What is the correct procedure to activate a new voltage regulator for a generator set up? I istalled new reg. but gen. does not charge. Took cover off reg. made points contact, with a test light on gen. output I pushed points closed , light on test light came on,points on reg. opened gen. quit charging .I think I need to short across gen. to excite but have forgotten how to do so. You need to polarize the generator. Any time the leads have been disconnected and then reconnected a jumper lead should be connected MOMENTARILY between the BATTERY and ARMATURE terminals of the regulator before starting the engine. This allows a momentary surge of current from the battery to the generator which correctly polarizes the generator with respect to the battery it is to charge. Taken right out of the book. All you need is to spark it. Don't leave the jumper lead on there too long. I just use a small piece of wire that happens to have alligator clips on it. I clip one end on one terminal and just touch the other to get a spark.
