I have not done UPS or FedX. I assume you'd print the label, attach it to the package and then take it to their facility or around here in some business parks hey have drop boxes for them to get the package.
With USPS you print and attach the label then over on the left hand side of the page towards the bottom you have a link to request a pickup. Go there and tell USPS you want it picked up with your next mail delivery and where you will leave the package for them to get it (front porch, etc.). It's free.
And yes, USPS shipping prices via ebay are cheaper than at the post office. Actually aside from ebay you can purchase postage at the USPS site and they even charge less than at the post office too--because it's online vs taking an employee's time. But ebay is even better in another way. Ebay offers USPS ground parcel select service and you can print your postage online, while you can't do that via the USPS web site--they only let you print priority or priority express postage online. Why? I have no clue. But if I want to ship a Christmas present cheap I have to take it to the PO to get ground rates. If however I sell something on ebay I can print ground postage right there and tell them to come get it on the front porch.
I'm honest when listing size and weights. I assume USPS checks and if I was off by much either I would be contacted to pay more or it would be held postage due at the buyers PO. Either way the seller will be POed if there is a problem that delayed shipping or that cost them money thus to ensure smooth shipping I'm honest with my weights and sizes.
