Couple of instances:
I remember playing cowboys and indians: Have a friend standing by with a lasso made from 1/4" Manila rope....type of rope is important so if you don't know what it is, look it up.
You get on your bicycle and ride by as fast as you can, ducking your head.
Object of the game is to outrun your friend with the lasso.
On at least on one occasion, I didn't and had a really bad rope burn around my neck....but it was fun and I survived. Mom didn't say a word.
And then there was this "clay pit" where we played and hunted frequently. Pit clay was excavated for use in local construction sites. Depth was probably 20 feet and had been used for years allowing vegetation to grow and water to collect in the low spots.
Didn't bring along a "liter of purified water in a bottle" so when we got thirsty, thought nothing of finding a water hole, skimming the slime off the top and having a good drink.
And then in the summer down on the Texas coast, mosquitoes were a nuisance. So the town where I lived had some surplus military Jeeps with DDT sprayers. They would come through the neighborhoods about once a week, unannounced, but you could hear the noise of the pumps for the DDT well ahead of time. We'd ride our bikes through the clouds every time they came by till they dissipated.
