One of the places I lease, and have now for some 35 years or more, was owned by my cousin. His dad died, and his brothers and sisters made him split the place up, and he ended up with about 60 acres left. He quit farming as he had with his father, and started hauling cows for local farmers for a living. He had a full line of machinery, and accumulated about a dozen trucks while he hauled cows, but the machinery sat for over thirty years in the weeds and brush. One newer piece was a new AC no-till planter. When we pulled the stuff out for scrap for his daughter a few years back, we had to cut a 1' tree down in the middle of it. Most everything went to the scrap yard, but the usable stuff was sold at auction, including 6 tractors that we were able to get started with a few days of work on them. There was even a brand new looking New Idea elevator (from the side) that wound up being scrapped from sitting in the woods for years with leaves and debris in the trough. The good machinery included a pretty full line of fast hitch equipment, and a baler that I was given for watching over the operation of cleaning things up. But I have to admit, it was sad to see the stuff sitting there, and having Jim refuse to sell any of it even to me.

Like most features of our life, few things are all good or all bad, and most such judgments depend on our own perspective or viewpoint. In our particular hobby, we enjoy the nostalgic return to the days of our youth as we recreate many of the scenes that took place on the family farm that served as the stage for the first few acts of the play that is our live ...
