: I am looking for a 45-55hp tractor on a relatively small frame to do mowing, snow, utility and small orchard work.
: I have alot of steep hills and low trees, hence the preference for a smaller, wider tractor. I have a number of smaller tractors an my ideal vehicle would be something like an MF135 with more power.
: I would use this vehicle only about 100 hours per year or less.
: Was looking through the want ads and found the following: IHC504 diesel, 3500 hours, 50hp.

: Spoke to someone who owned the tractor but was not that familiar with it. He said it had a two point hitch that you could raise and draft from the seat.

: I said "Is it just a three point hitch that is missing the top link?" Unfortunately, he didn't know what I was talking about.
: He uses it for a tow behind brush hog.

: So here are my questions everyone:

: Is this a good tractor? Opinions, please.

My neighbor has an IH504 diesel w/ a loader on it. I've never used it, but it does still run and is used fairly regularly.

: What years was it manufactured?

I don't have any books in front of me, but I think @1961-1965.

The next several questions would be guesswork for me. If someone else doesn't respond, I'll try to catch my neighbor sometime this week.

: Does it have a differential lock?
: Is 3500 hrs too much? How much more life should I expect?
: Any problems I should know about?
: He wants $4,900.00. Is it overpriced for the amount of hours?
: Is there a such thing as a two point hitch on this tractor or is he just missing the the top link?

Yes there was a 2 pnt hitch (also called the fast hitch). I think either the 2pnt or the 3pnt was optional. The 2 pnt can be converted to 3 pnt, check the www.worksaver.com website for the kits.

: Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer,

: Mark

Today's Featured Article - The 8N and the Fox - by Zane Sherman. Dec. 13 1998, Renfroe, Alabama. Last niht I dreamed about the day that I plowed the field of about 10 acres over on what Jimmy and Dandy called the Ledbetter field. I was driving the 1948 8N Ford tractor that Jimmy bought in 48 new This was prebably in about 1951 and maybe even befor the house was built. This would have made me to be about16 years old and I drove the tractor for nothing and would have paid to drive it if I had had any money which I didn't, but neit ... [Read Article]
