Both sides have a job, a purpose etc., its nice when they use discretion in the field, it's their judgement call based on the laws. Having been a full time driver, tractor trailers, tri-axle dump and all the years later I spent traveling for work, I encountered law enforcement many times, always greeted them and did my best to conduct myself in a respectful manner, for the most part, got the same in return. I've had many experiences with D.O.T. inspections and being weighed, most seemed routine, but I did have one guy who found me everywhere I went, and another situation that really soured me on driving, I don't want to deal with the additional stress the job can have when you have law enforcement on your back constantly, especially when you did your best to make sure the truck was safe, and not overweight. I had my license suspended without even knowing because of an employer who did not pay a no inspection fine, ticket was written in my name, and should have not been, not a moving violation. That ticked me off to no end, got nailed at work and the boss had to come down and finish the day, he was cool about it, no problem, get it fixed, see you tomorrow. I had it restored that afternoon, but my conversation with that previous employer was harsh, wealthy cheapskate, I still run into people who had the same experience with him about payment. At that time I had enough of driving, every time I looked back I was getting pulled over and now my license is suspended, I had no idea, this went beyond the job into my personal affairs, my driving privileges out side of work are suspended because I showed up for work and did what was asked of me.

The one thing that stood out was that these guys were usually friendly, personable and often times fair, when they could have wrote you for a lot worse. Most of what I drove was late model and or well maintained, not new but well kept. I actually used to adjust my brakes daily when running tri-axle, and or at least check to make sure they were right. We used to haul some heavy loads at times when we were told it was ok by the same guys who could nail us, road jobs that took priority, one guy said, keep your brakes in order, all the lights working, mudflaps on, do not speed, and we will not bother you on weight, he told me to my face after pulling me over, this was a new 16 mile section of road north of Speculator NY. We had load tickets from the plant, 29-30 ton on a tri-axle, (6) 5 ton drops, I think it was a 50 mile round trip to the site, the plant was in Chestertown, they really needed this road done, it was in autumn.
