Ford 640 ignition problem (???)

My 640 was running fine, then just stopped like I had turned off the key. Engine cranked OK but wouldn't fire. I jerked a plug and it wasn't getting spark when I cranked her. I pulled the coil wire, and got no spark there, either. The coil terminal to the battery had 6V no problem. I replaced the coil, distributor, rotor, condenser and point, but all it would do is crank. Still appeared to be no spark to the plugs. Battery was almost dead, I was totally bummed, and on what was probably the last crank in the battery, she started.
So what am I missing here?
