I was taught by a bodyman when removing dents/dings to work hammer and dolly from outside edge of dent/ding to inside. Lessens the likelyhood/amount of stretched metal. The outside of dent was last to get there so first to remove. I have taken 2 ballpeen hammers and flatened the face of 1 and used them in place of body hammers and dollies. May not be right way but has worked for me most of the time. Something else I have done in past was to put a dent in scrap metal and practice removing it prior to working on good parts.
