: I have a 6 volt system still on my 1952 farmall A I have put a 9 volt battery in it.....what must I do to the charging system now so it will charge : : joel After the hilarity (or lack of) the real answer to your question is that I do not believe a 6 volt generator will maintain a 9 volt battery. A 6 volt generator should produce about 7-8 volts when running and charging a 6 volt battery. It needs more than the battery terminal voltage to actually "push" a charge into a battery. At a stretch with no load your 6 volt generator may reach 9 volts, but this will only maintain the power for the load (Ignition) but will not charge a battery. I guess you could get a 12 volt generator and tweak the regulator to maintain but not cook a 9 volt battery. It is the current which is more important in this situation. You would have to experiment to limit the charge rate on a fully charged battery to probably about 1 amp. I have not tried any of this, so be careful and good luck.
