: Mr. King and Mr. Hard--Thanks you for your good information. I still have a question. Across the battery at 1500 rpm my meter reads 6.24 volts. Is that sufficient enough to rule out the generator because when I take a voltage reading on the generator it shows between 1.64 and 1.65 output. does this indicate the voltage regulator in your opinion? Thanks so much...Jerry Coleman

Jerry: Voltage sounds low. Like Charles said, should be around 8 volts. Not real sure where you are getting your 1.65 reading, if it is volts, ohms, or what. If you have tried grounding the field wire, usually the smaller of the two off of the generator, with the engine running and did not get something like 30 amps and 8 or more volts out of the charging system, it is probably the generator. Amperage is just as important as voltage. You can have a bad regulator and get good voltage initially, but not enough amperage and the battery charge will gradually go down. Pull it off the rig and do the "motor check" I believe you said that it was a positive ground system. So attach a battery jumper cable from your battery negative to the armature lug. Then put the other from the battery to the field terminal (but just for a second or two). The generator should operate like a motor and spin the pulley. If it does not, there is likely an open short or a bad brush in the generator. Take it over to the rebuld shop and have them repair it. If the generator does "motor" it is good and the problem is elsewhere in the system. Could be a regulator, or wiring. If you replace either, be sure and get directions from the shop or a manual on "polarizing" the system before you hook the battery back up. It has been so long since I did one, I've forgotten the exact steps, but I know it has to be done.
Hopefully Charles will respond and provide some more advice also, just to be sure I got this right.

Best Luck
