My son worked for 10 years for another farmer. Took heifers and calves for part of his pay. We were able to retain a couple of hundred acres of farm land/wood lot from my fathers estate for a price we could afford (barely afford I should say). He started milking cows last Aug. We rent the land to other farmers and he buys TMR from a local large farmer. He's actually making a few bucks. If he had to buy the machinery to grow his own crops it would be very, very difficult. Ten of the local guys milking 70 cows or less are buying their TMR from this larger farmer. Try to stay as far away from the stinking banks as you possibly can. Either do it on your own money, hire it done, or don't do it at all. As said below, expect to work an outside job for a quite a few years until you build enough cash reserve/equity to go it on your own. Hang in there. If you want it bad enough, you'll figure it out. Good Luck!
