: I found af Ford 231 for sale. The owner states that it is a 1975, 3cyl 40hp diesel with 3 point hitch/with depth control, and role bar. I am trying to establish a fair price. He is asking 5K. Also would it be a good utility tractor for small hobby farmer. This is always so hard to determine - fair price - without actually seeing the tractor. A new machine in this power range will sell for around $17,000. From there, you have to evaluate the overall condition of the machine, as well as the running condition of the engine and driveline. As a rule-of-thumb a well-kept 20-year-old machine that hasn't been abused is worth around 1/2 of the equivalent new model. That means a high-side price of $7500. I see a lot of machines selling around here using that formula. So, 5,000 sounds like a reasonable price if it's been kept well. I've also seen machines of this age that should be buried as dead selling for more...... Perhaps a Ford person will have a reason why this model is worth more or less than this. I tend to think of most tractors as being tractors (even though I've mostly had JD's over the years)....
