This accident reminded me about another one I heard about a year or so ago. A fellow had recently gotten a small tractor, and was helping his neighbour bring in hay. They used this tractor to pull the full wagon, presumably the other tractor was bigger but was on the baler. The tractor had the ballast removed from one tire when they replaced the tire. Apparently, it lost traction on a side slope, slipped sideways, and the heavy wagon pushed the tractor over and rolled on top of it. The fellow was killed. We took the ballast out of our smaller tractor since it isn't used for heavy pulling anymore, we use it for cutting grass and light field work. I figured it didn't need the extra weight, and when it leaks, it just rusts the rims. I never thought that removing the ballast changes the handling capability of the tractor as well. We don't have any real slopes on the farm that we go sideways on, so I'm not concerned about it, but I'd be willing to bet there's a lot of tractors out there that don't have the ballast in the tires anymore, and the same kind of accident could happen on a side slope. Something to keep in mind.
