: Bill, you will need to do more than that. A used crankshaft is around $260. You can start by pulling the pan. Then check the connecting rods start with No. 4. or No. 1, my guess is that there will be major problems here. The conrods are probably toasted and will need replacing. Conrods go for about $60 each, used. The engine most likely have to be pulled, then you can get the crank out. The Fordson Major is a simple diesel to work on, no special tools have to be used. If you deside to work on it, be sure to check out the crank end play when reassembling it. If there is too much crank endplay the thrust bearings tend to drop to the oil pan bottom. Your clutch will start acting odd for a time, and then after about 5- 50 hrs. of running fine you will be back doing the above all over again- plus a rebuilt block and linebore which is $500-$1,000. Good luck, Keep intouch, I've done 2 of these engines.

Just picked up a 69 Fordson Major 4 cyl. diesel. Don't have any specs on it.
: The previous owner ran it out of oil & motor seized at idle.
: Can I pull the top and pan and try a ring & hone job?

Today's Featured Article - Picking Corn - by Rick Nikolich. It was the day before Christmas shutdown at work and I asked our lead engineering expert Scott Andrzejewski what he was going to do over the holidays. He said that he had some corn that he still needed to pick with an antique one-row New Idea corn picker. Scott has a nice farm about an hour north of Lansing in St. Johns, MI. He wanted to get the rest of his corn in by the next day (Christmas Eve). We had about an inch of new snow on the ground and single digit temperatures. So in the bac ... [Read Article]
