Thanks for the replies. Spent some quality time last night with the manual to see what I was up against.
Without a tear-down to see what's really going on, it appears to me that the two seals between the splined differential shaft and the side gear on the right side are seeping. To access these seals, it seems that one, if not both axle gears need to be removed (and the axle housings with them), along with the bearing carrier. Then it's possible to withdraw the side gears.
Of course, if the side gear shafts are wobbly, then a complete set-up of the differential, adjusting shims for proper preload and backlash, is indicated.
Then I can do the repairs to the side gear seals and then the brakes.
None of this is a trivial undertaking, especially half-sheltered in a drafty shed. Might be I'll have to get used to no brakes until next summer.
Also, my TLB seems to have no parking brake, I can't even see a place where one was installed. Was it common for these tractors to have no means of holding a position without having to drop the stabilizers? Very annoying feature, if you could call it that...
