A sad day for us tomorrrow , as we will be laying to rest a good friend , nieghbour retired dairy farmer and WW2 vet. My friend Alan was 40 years older than me, but we could relate to each other in ways I can't oftened do with folks of my own age. As a young man Alan went west on the harvest exscurtion, in 39. When he came home he enlisted in the army, the Black Watch I belive. His grouptrained most of the winter before D-Day for landing, but a few weeks before the big day, he was transfered to the provo core.Beaucse he could ride a motor bike, he would not need to be trained to do this and could asumme a traffic control job after landing, which he did. By the time he crossed the channel, he was sent to Holland. He told me how devastated he was to learn of the fate of many of his buddys that did not make it through the D-Day landing. And he felt that he would have been amoung thier numbers if he had not been transfered. He did not think of him self as any "war hero", but to me I always thought of him as a hero. . When returning home in the fall of 45, he married his sweetheart, and joined his brother on the farm . They had a 400 acre dairy, and milked around 40 cows un till the 1970;s. Alan still had the old 10-20 IH his dad bought new in the 20;s and the last new tractor they bought a IH 706. Alan was sharp and still lived in his own home and still drove right up to the end . Wife and I went for a visit back in June, and he was in good sprits and happy to see us. He had a heart attack and passed away on Saturday, . Alan was in his 93rd year, and will be missed by all who knew him.
