: I am a tractor neophyte with a very old farm in Maine: moderately
: hilly, lots of rocks, and pastures which have gone back to woods.
: Hasn't been worked seriously since before the War. There is an old
: orchard which is now bearing fairly well; we heat by wood.

: I need a tractor desperately to:

: 1) Mow moderately hilly, somewhat rocky fields,
: 2) winch and tow logs,
: 3) winch and haul stones

: and some what less desperately to:

: 4) dig post-holes
: 5) load stones, dirt, gravel, manure, hay
: 6) spray orchard
: 7) cut cordwood to stove length

: A farmer down the road a far bit had a stroke and his daughter is
: selling a Allis Chalmer WD-45 narrow front-end tractor. The serial
: number is 200913 which I think makes it either a 1956 or 1957. It
: comes with a belt and a circular woodsaw mounted on the front, and a
: dump trailer for hauling. I have not been able to run it yet, but she
: insists it runs well and has good hydrolics. I really like this
: tractor, but she is asking $2,200. As far as I can tell, this is
: about $500 too much.

: My questions are:

: 1) Is this tractor suitable for what I need to do? Don't want to start this debate again, but would not recommend narrow front end for hilly rocky terrain

: 2) What should I look out for in buying this tractor? As with any older tractor, check for good compression, oil pressure (10-15 psi is good),ease of starting cold, water in the oil, and strange grinding noises from the drive train.

: 3) How much will attachments to mow and winch cost? Good used bush hog is about $300, new $600-1000.
Do I need a 3-point hitch conversion kit?
Recommended for your uses.

: 4) What would be a fair price for the tractor?
Your guess of $1700 is pretty close, depending on condition for your area.
