: I just purchased a Ford 8N. After starting it 2 or 3 times the battery cable going to the positive terminal disconnted. I noticed that that the cable was very hot. In fact, when I tried to start it again, the connection at the positive terminal got so hot it glowed. I haven't been able to start it since. Any ideas? Thanks :: Scan the wiring on the tractor and look for :: blackened areas where the wiring has shorted :: to the engine. It is most likely in the path :: from the generator to the battery or the wiring :: to the coil/magneto. Worse yet it could be a :: short in the ignition switch itself. You could :: recharge the battery and start disconnecting :: each part of the circuitry and until you find :: the fault and the wire does not get hot. :: Normally a visual inspection should be all :: that is needed to find the short, assuming it :: is not the starter switch.
