Some years ago we had about 15 people in for Thanksgiving dinner. My wife was sitting at the end of the table and she asked one of our grandchildren who was sitting at the other end of the table, to pass something around.
There were four or five grandchildren sitting at the other end of the table. One of them picked up the requested dish and handed to the person sitting next the them, who handed it to the person sitting next the them, who handed it back across the table to the original person who started handing the dish.
Around and around the dish went being passed by the three in a small circle at the opposite end of the table from where my wife was sitting.
"See, Grandma, we're passing the dish around."
Literal is not always better.
