Thanks to all the folks on the forum that have advised me on my old Ford 641. I've finally diagnosed the loud rattle I've had to my satisfaction.
It appears that when the hydraulic pump went south there was some damage to the pump drive gear. It seems to be loose in a front to rear direction on the camshaft. I made a block-off plate and ran the tractor without the pump and there is also a definite gear noise under the timing cover.May have a tooth or teeth damaged.
The old girl needs to be taken apart and have the pump drive gear and the front timing gear and crank gear replaced.
Now all I have to do is decide whether I want to tackle this or not. Although I have the space and tools to do this and have gone deep into cars and motorcycles before, I'm really busy at work these days (we're moving into a new hospital with all of the incredible hassles that entails).
Ive found a very trusted and competent tractor mechanic that is willing to do this for me. In addition to doing what I mentioned before, he will replace the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing if there is any doubt as to their long term prognosis.
I kind of feel like I'm "wussing out" on all of you by farming this out, but my life right now doesnt include the time for this. Its going to cost $$$ but at least I'll have a good tractor when we're done.
Thanks for all of the great help with the diagnostics!
