The test is this... if it locks up when you shift it... it's f*****. You can try running it like that but I wouldn't. Repairs get exponentially worse the longer you wait. If the clutch plates are just starting to shed material you can probably repair it without too much cleaning. If you continue running it and it sheds a lot of material into the oil... then you get a major tear down to clean all of the crap out of the housings. You probably damage the hydraulic pump and the various valves in the system, etc. You might get out of this now for a grand in parts plus a day of labor. If you wait it could be 4 grand in parts and 4 days labor...
