The problem this year is the cold. Tornadoes and storms are formed when warm air collides with cool air. This spring has been one of the coolest on record for the Midwest plains states - hot air from the Southwest moves up and the contact point is in Oklahoma. Last year temps in Oklahoma and Kansas were in the mid 80s in April and only got warmer from their - most of the stormy weather was to north and east of those states - hence the massive drought. This year the cool weather is sitting over Kansas and jalf of Oklahoma and the "line" between the cool air and the hot air is right over top of Oklahoma City. And the temperature differences are extreme - leading to extreme weather.
As for "recorded history of tornadoes" - look up how well they kept the stats 50 years ago - let alone 100 years ago.
