Guido, Thomas Edison invented the first diode before the light bulb. It was a tube, like you are discribing. I think Columbus brought one over on the Mayflower and traded it to the Indians.
I've never seen a Variable voltage charger.
I've known Bill for a while. He likes to make some totally different things out of what he has available. Once I saw he put a Briggs on top of the lower end of a 25 hp Johnson outboard. Don't know if it ever worked.
It will be interesting to see if a 6v and 12v charger will charge 18v battery. George
