Well the Case 1070 rides again!!

I just could not sleep real good wondering what to do on the Case 1070. So I got up extra early and did my chores. I started to tear into the tractor at a little after 6 am. By after 8 AM I had the injectors all out and the injection pump off. I called a good friend that owns/runs an injection pump repair business. I told him the deal. He volunteered to look at the pump/injectors just as soon as I could get them to him. So My wife ran them in while I kept working on the rest of the engine.

I did call my brother to go over to my buddy Doug's place ( the Case guy) and have him come over. He came over about 930 am. By then I had all the pistons and sleeves out. I was plastic gauging the main bearings. The rods where a little looser than I really like about .006-.008 I would rather them be under .004. The crankshaft rod journals where right at spec. The mains where a little loose at .010.

By then Doug and my brother had got here. Doug looked it all over and said he would be right back after a quick trip home. My brother and I started cleaning the block and sleeves up. Doug got back in about a half an hour. He had a NOS set of pistons. The originals had changed to ones that are heavier made. He had a set of the heavier ones. They had the rings with them. He had several left over partial gasket sets. By using some out of all of them we had all the gaskets we needed. So that just left us without any bearings. So I got on the phone and found a set of rods and main bearings. They where in Cedar Rapids. So the wife got to be the parts-go-getter again. LOL

So while she went after the bearings my brother, Wes and Doug cleaned the block up getting it ready to reinstall the sleeves. I took the valves out of the cylinder head and resurfaced them. They cleaned up real fast. They really did not need ground but I had them out so it only takes a little time to do them.

After Doug and Wes got the block cleaned up they started on the old sleeves. I had marked the sleeves as to what hole they came out of and how they where turned. I measured all of the sleeves IDs. They where not worn much but they where slightly out of round. A sleeve wears more perpendicular to the crankshaft. So they where about .0005 out of round but they where still within spec. So I just used my precision hone and got them under .0001 in roundness. As I finished honing one Wes and Doug where putting them back in the block. ( We did measure the stand height.) We also put them back in a 1/4 turn from where they had been.

So by the time my wife got back with the bearings we had the sleeves and head done. So my brother rolled the main bearings in. He is fourteen years younger than me. He can hold his arms up better than me. LOL. Doug and I re-installed the rods on the "new" pistons. Wes got the main bearing in about when we had the rod/pistons/rings all together. So Doug and I put them in and Wes did the rod bearings.

We checked the new mains and rods out. The rods now are running at .002-.004. The mains are running .004-.006 now. That is right on the money for me.

So we re-installed the cylinder head and adjusted the valves. I called my pump guy and he said he would have the the pump/injectors done by the time we got there to get them. So the wife took off again. LOL She is really putting the miles on the car today.

By the time she got back we had the engine all back together. So I started on the pump and Doug did the injectors.

At 3:45 PM we started the tractor. BY 5:00 PM we had it all back together. It is running on my Dyno right now. I want to run it for a few hours to set the rings before it goes back on the TMR wagon.

So here is how it is going to stack up cost wise:

My pump guys told my wife No charge for his work. HECK of a fellow!!!! I did send a good Bosch inline pump with the wife to give him. (it was off a combine so the governor would have to be changed to use it on a tractor)

Doug did not want anything for his horded parts. I give him a Case running gear and barge box he has been wanting.

I don't know what the bearings will be as I will not get the bill on them until next week.

I had about ten hours labor. Doug had about six hours and my brother had about six. Not too bad for two old guys and a youngster. LMAO

I should tell you all a little about Doug. He is 76 years old. He has worked at several different Case equipment dealers. He quit when Case bought IH. He was mad at how that turned out. He just loved the Case tractor. They basically got replaced with IH tractors. Until about ten years ago he did repair work at his farm. He now just plays around on what ever catches his fancy. HE has THREE barns full of Case tractor parts. I mean LARGE barns. Not a single thing sorted out or wrote down where it is. He just remembers where everything is at. He does remember where it is too. LOL I have half the stuff he does and I can't hardly keep track of it. Doug does not sell much of what he has. He is a real hoarder. I will hate to be in on sorting it all out if anything happens to him. How he keeps busy now is that he will buy an old Case tractor and repair it to good working condition an then sell it. He says that is the best way to sell his parts. He just laughs and says he has enough parts for the next fifty years after that he will have to start buying more again. LMAO

I will wait until Steve is up an about to tell him what went wrong on the 1070. She really is sounding good. Real smooth sounding. Doug is watching over it like a new Father after his first kid. LOL. Doug says that it will have a little more horse power as the new style pistons are slightly higher compression. It broke a 100 hp and still had more but I did not want to really pull it hard until it runs a few more hours. Then I will pull it down and make it bark for 15 minutes and then let it cool of an pull it down again. I usually do that 3-4 times and I have never had a set of rings not seat doing them that way. Just running it on the TMR wagon would never have done it.

So other than this little project I have not been too busy today. LOL
